How I got into gardening
I didn’t grow up with a perfect cottage garden. My mum kept a few pots going and my dad had strong opinions about the lawn, but that was about it. It wasn’t until my late twenties that I started taking it seriously – a small back garden in Greater Manchester, a bag of compost, and an absolute determination not to kill a courgette plant two years running.
Eventually I got lucky with an allotment plot. It was a mess when I took it over – waist-high weeds, a rotting shed door, and soil that felt like it had never seen a fork. Three seasons later it was actually producing food. That’s when I realised I’d properly caught the bug.

What I actually test and grow
Everything on this site is written from experience with UK growing conditions – which means short seasons, variable summers, and the ever-present risk of a soggy August. I grow and test in the North West, so if something works here it will work almost anywhere in Britain.
Why I started The Garden Patch
Most gardening advice online is either aimed at people in the South of England, written for completely different climates, or so vague it’s useless. I wanted somewhere practical – month-by-month timing that actually matches what’s happening in a Manchester April, variety recommendations that don’t assume you have a greenhouse, and honest takes on what’s worth spending money on.
No fluff. No padding. Just useful information from someone who’s been doing this long enough to know the difference.
