A slow draining sink is one of those household problems that starts as a minor nuisance and gets steadily worse until the sink barely drains at all. In most cases the cause is straightforward – a build-up of grease, soap scum, hair or food debris in the trap or pipework – and clearing it is a job most householders can do themselves without tools beyond a plunger and a bucket. The key is knowing which method to try first and when to escalate.
Kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks block for different reasons and respond to slightly different approaches. A kitchen sink that drains slowly is almost always grease and food residue coating the inside of the pipework; a bathroom sink is usually hair and soap build-up in the plug hole or trap. This guide covers both, starting with the simplest interventions and working up to removing and cleaning the U-bend – the fix that solves the problem when nothing else has.

Why sinks slow down
Most slow drains have a straightforward cause that falls into one of a small number of categories. Identifying which type you have helps you pick the right fix first time rather than working through every method in turn.
How to clear the blockage – step by step
Work through these methods in order. Most slow sinks respond to one of the first three approaches and never need the U-bend removed. Start simple and escalate only if needed.
Remove visible debris from the plug hole
Put on rubber gloves. Remove the plug or drain cover and pull out any hair, soap scum or debris sitting just inside the drain. In bathroom sinks this is often enough to restore full drainage. A wire hook or a bent coat hanger helps reach debris that has dropped slightly below the surface.
Flush with boiling water
Boil a full kettle and pour it slowly down the drain in two or three stages, leaving 30 seconds between each pour. This is particularly effective on kitchen sink grease blockages – the hot water melts the fat and carries it through the trap. Do not use boiling water on plastic push-fit pipework without checking it is rated for high temperatures; very hot rather than boiling water is safer for older plastic fittings.
Try soda crystals and boiling water
Pour half a mug of soda crystals directly into the drain, then immediately follow with a kettle of just-boiled water. The alkaline reaction breaks down grease and soap scum. Leave for 10-15 minutes then flush with hot water from the tap. This method works well on kitchen sinks and is safe for all pipework.
Use a plunger
Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cup. If the sink has an overflow hole, block it with a damp cloth – this forces the pressure downward rather than escaping up through the overflow. Place the plunger firmly over the drain and pump with sharp, vigorous strokes 10 to 15 times. Pull the plunger away sharply on the final stroke. Repeat two or three times before testing drainage. A flat-cup plunger works far better than a toilet plunger for sinks.
Try a chemical drain unblocker
If mechanical methods have not worked, a caustic drain unblocker can dissolve organic blockages. Follow the product instructions exactly – most require you to pour the specified amount into the drain, leave for 30 minutes to an hour, then flush with cold water. Always wear rubber gloves and ensure the room is ventilated. Do not mix drain unblocker with any other cleaning product.
Never mix drain unblocker with bleach or other cleaners. Caustic drain products react violently with bleach and can produce toxic chlorine gas. If you have already poured bleach down the drain, flush thoroughly with cold water and leave it for at least 30 minutes before using any caustic unblocker.
Clearing the U-bend
If none of the methods above have worked, the blockage is almost certainly sitting in the U-bend – the curved section of pipe directly under the sink. Removing and cleaning it is straightforward and takes around 20 minutes. The U-bend on modern plastic waste systems unscrews by hand; older chrome or lead traps may need a spanner.
Check the washers while the U-bend is off. The rubber washers inside the slip nut connections harden and flatten over time. If yours look flat, cracked or compressed, replace them before refitting. Replacement packs cost a pound or two and prevent drips that are easy to miss until they cause damage.
How to prevent future blockages
Once the sink is draining freely, a small amount of regular maintenance keeps it that way. The most effective preventive step is also the simplest: a drain strainer that catches debris before it enters the pipework. In kitchen sinks, this stops food particles reaching the trap. In bathrooms, a hair catcher over the plug hole is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent recurring blockages.
When to call a plumber
Most slow draining sinks are a DIY fix. There are situations, however, where the problem points to something further down the drainage system that requires professional attention. The clearest sign is when more than one sink or drain in the house is slow or blocked at the same time – this suggests the issue is in the main stack or underground drainage rather than the trap of a single appliance.
Gurgling sounds from other drains when you run a sink – a toilet gurgling when the kitchen sink drains, for example – indicate a venting problem in the soil stack rather than a localised blockage. This is not something that plunging or cleaning the U-bend will fix. Similarly, a persistent bad smell from the drain with no visible blockage can point to a damaged or dry trap further down the system. Both of these need professional diagnosis rather than DIY attempts.
