At a glance
Cordless lawn mowers have genuinely replaced petrol for the majority of UK gardens. Five years ago the honest answer to “should I buy a cordless mower?” was “only if your garden is small and flat.” In 2026 that answer has changed: the best cordless platforms now deliver performance that matches or exceeds entry-level petrol mowers without the noise, fumes, annual servicing costs or fuel storage headache. For any garden under 400m2 on reasonably flat ground, cordless is now the default recommendation.
We tested three of the most popular cordless mowers available in the UK – putting each through typical British garden conditions including long wet grass after a week of rain, the hardest real-world test any UK mower faces. If you want to know more about keeping the lawn in top condition year-round, our guide to the best lawn feeds for UK gardens covers the seasonal feeding programme that keeps grass dense and healthy between cuts.
How we tested. Each mower was used on the same lawn over multiple cuts across different conditions – freshly mowed weekly grass, 10-day growth and post-rain long grass. We assessed cut finish, battery life under load, ease of use and maneuverability, scoring each on performance, value and UK suitability.
Quick verdict summary
All 3 cordless mowers ranked
The EGO LM1903E is the cordless mower we would recommend to most UK homeowners with a medium to large garden. The 56V 5Ah battery delivers genuine petrol-mower performance without the noise, fumes or annual servicing. On a typical UK semi-detached garden of 150-200m2 it handles a full cut with battery to spare, even in the long wet grass that accumulates after a week of British weather. The self-propelled drive makes light work of any slopes and the rear roller produces clean traditional stripes.
At £449 it is the most expensive in our test, but for a tool used weekly for a decade the cost-per-cut calculation is favourable. The 56V platform is compatible across the full EGO range including blowers, trimmers and hedgetrimmers – a meaningful benefit for anyone building an EGO toolkit. The 55-litre grass box is generous and the weather-sealing is noticeably more comprehensive than the budget options.
The Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-660 is the right choice for smaller UK gardens up to 200m2 where budget matters. At £249 it is significantly cheaper than the EGO and noticeably lighter at 14kg – easier to manoeuvre and simpler to store in a compact shed. The 36V Bosch battery ecosystem means existing Bosch tool owners may already have compatible batteries, reducing the effective cost further.
The narrower 36cm cut width means more passes per session on larger lawns, and it will not handle long wet grass as confidently as the EGO – plan to mow regularly rather than leaving it. The lack of self-propulsion and rear roller are the main trade-offs at this price, but for a well-maintained smaller lawn it performs comfortably above its price point.
The Greenworks GD48LM41 punches above its weight at under £170. For a small, regularly maintained UK garden of up to 150m2 it does everything needed – and the 41cm cut width is actually wider than the Bosch at a lower price, which is a genuine surprise. At 13.5kg it is the lightest of the three, easy to handle and straightforward to store.
The 2Ah battery is the limiting factor. On a larger lawn or after a week of growth you may find yourself needing a recharge mid-cut. Buy a spare 2Ah battery for around £35 and the range concern largely disappears. As an entry point to cordless mowing for a modest garden and tight budget, it is the best value in our test.

What to look for when buying
Voltage and battery capacity are the two most important specifications to check. Voltage (V) indicates power, amp hours (Ah) indicate runtime – a 56V 5Ah battery stores significantly more energy than a 36V 2Ah. For UK gardens over 200m2 aim for at least 40V and 4Ah. Always check whether the battery is included in the quoted price as many listings show a body-only figure that can be significantly cheaper but misleading when comparing total cost.
Cut width determines how many passes you need per session. A 48cm mower covers the same area in roughly 25% fewer passes than a 36cm model – on a 200m2 garden that is a meaningful time saving every week through the season. Self-propelled drive is worth paying for on any garden with slopes or over 200m2. A rear roller is essential if you want traditional striped lawn finish – only some cordless mowers include one, so check the specification carefully before buying. Our guide to how to stripe a lawn UK covers exactly what to look for.
Always confirm battery and charger are included before comparing prices. Many cordless mower listings show a body-only price. The same model can appear at two very different price points depending on what is included. Confirm exactly what is in the box before making a decision based on headline price alone.
Battery platform compatibility is worth considering if you already own cordless garden tools. EGO, Bosch, Makita and Greenworks all run closed battery ecosystems – buying within the same brand means sharing batteries across tools and reducing the effective cost of each purchase over time.
Final verdict
For most UK gardens up to 500m2: EGO Power+ LM1903E. The performance, battery life and self-propulsion make it the outright best cordless mower in our test.
For smaller gardens up to 200m2 on a budget: Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-660. Excellent value, lighter to use and part of a strong battery ecosystem. The cut quality is good for a well-maintained lawn mowed regularly.
For the tightest budget on a small garden: Greenworks GD48LM41. Surprising value under £170 with a wider cut width than you would expect at the price. Buy a spare battery and the runtime limitation largely disappears.
The EGO LM1903E is the best cordless lawn mower available in the UK for most gardens. For budget-conscious buyers the Bosch AdvancedRotak 36-660 delivers excellent value for smaller lawns, and the Greenworks GD48LM41 is the standout choice under £200.
