One important point before choosing any compost: the size and material of your containers also matter. Small pots of any material need more frequent watering than large ones, and any pot without adequate drainage holes will cause problems regardless of how good the compost is. Always ensure drainage is in place before worrying about which mix to use.
Types of compost for pots
Not all composts are equal, and the right type depends on what you are growing and how long the plant will remain in the same container. Best mixture by plant type
The single most useful piece of advice for container growing is to match the mix to the plant rather than defaulting to whatever is cheapest or most available. The differences between plant groups are significant enough to affect whether the planting succeeds or fails, particularly for long-term permanent plantings where the wrong compost degrades and collapses within a couple of seasons.
When to add grit, perlite or loam
Most composts benefit from amendment with one or more additives depending on the plants being grown and the conditions the pot will face. The three most useful amendments for UK container gardeners are horticultural grit, perlite and added loam. Each does a different job and the choice depends on whether the priority is drainage, aeration, weight or long-term structure.
Add slow-release fertiliser granules at planting for best results. Most composts contain nutrients for 6-8 weeks only. How often to refresh pot compost
Container compost degrades over time as organic matter breaks down, nutrients are used up and the structure collapses. How quickly this happens depends on the type of compost used, the size of the pot and how heavily it is planted. Multipurpose compost typically needs replacing after one growing season. Loam-based John Innes mixes can last two to three years before becoming compacted and nutrient-exhausted.
Peat-free compost – does it work?
Since the UK’s move toward phasing out peat in horticultural compost, the quality and range of peat-free options has improved considerably. The early peat-free composts of a decade ago were inconsistent – some dried out rapidly and were difficult to re-wet, others were too coarse or broke down too quickly. The best peat-free composts available now perform comparably to peat-based products for most container applications.
For container gardening beginners, the most straightforward approach is a quality peat-free multipurpose compost amended with 15-20% perlite. This combination works well across the majority of container plants, manages UK rainfall without waterlogging and is easy to source at any garden centre or online. Add slow-release fertiliser granules and liquid feed from midsummer and most containers will perform well through the season with minimal intervention.
One area where many gardeners go wrong is using the same compost year after year without refreshing it. Old compost that has broken down becomes hydrophobic, compacted and nutrient-exhausted. Even if a plant appears to be growing, root health in degraded compost is usually poor. A simple top-dressing of fresh compost in spring – removing the top 5-8cm of old mix and replacing with fresh – can significantly improve performance without the disruption of a full repot. This is particularly effective for established shrubs and perennials where full repotting is not practical every year.
