Finding a slug trail across the kitchen floor at night is one of those mildly horrifying discoveries that sends many UK homeowners straight to the internet at midnight. Slugs entering houses is not uncommon – particularly in older properties with gaps around pipework, poorly fitting doors or damaged airbricks – and it tends to peak in autumn and after heavy rain when outdoor conditions become inhospitable and the warmth and humidity inside the house becomes attractive by comparison. The problem is almost always solvable, but the solution requires finding and sealing every entry point rather than just laying slug pellets indoors and hoping the problem resolves itself.
The key fact that makes indoor slug problems fixable is that slugs are physically incapable of entering a well-sealed building. Unlike mice or rats, which can gnaw through materials to create new entry points, slugs can only use gaps that already exist. They are also limited to ground level – a slug cannot climb a smooth vertical surface from outside to reach a gap above ground floor height. This means that a thorough survey of the ground floor perimeter, followed by proper sealing of any gaps found, permanently resolves the majority of indoor slug problems without requiring any ongoing chemical treatment.
Why Slugs Come Inside
Slugs are drawn indoors by three things: moisture, warmth and food. UK houses, particularly during autumn and winter, offer all three at ground level – condensation under doors, warmth radiating through the floor, and food scraps or pet food left accessible overnight. Slugs are most active at night and when humidity is high, which is why trail evidence tends to appear in the morning rather than during the day. The mucus trail they leave on hard floors is the most reliable sign of slug activity – a single slug can travel several metres in a night and the dry, whitish trail it leaves is distinctive.
Slugs are not intentionally seeking shelter in the way that mice do. They follow moisture gradients – moving toward damp, cool conditions and away from dry, open areas. A gap under a kitchen door that allows humid air to escape into a cold porch creates exactly the kind of moisture pathway that a slug will follow. Similarly, airbricks at ground level provide direct routes into the floor void beneath older suspended timber floors, and from there slugs can access the house interior through gaps around pipework or between floorboards. Understanding this moisture-following behaviour is what makes the entry-point search approach so effective – you are looking for anywhere that outdoor and indoor air mix at ground level.
Finding and Diagnosing Entry Points
The most reliable method for locating slug entry points is a torchlight inspection of the entire ground floor perimeter on a damp evening or night, ideally after rain. Take a torch and check every external door threshold, every airbrick, every point where pipework enters the building and every section of the external wall at ground level. Look for the dried mucus trails from previous nights – these appear as faint silvery lines on masonry, concrete or brickwork and clearly indicate the route the slug used. Fresh trails are obvious; dried trails may need the torch held at a low angle to catch the sheen.
How to Seal Them Out
Fit a brush seal or draught excluder to all external doors
A 4mm gap under a door is sufficient for a small slug. Fit a self-adhesive brush strip draught excluder to the bottom of all external doors – including back doors, side gates into conservatories and garage doors that connect to the house. Bristle-type excluders allow the door to open freely while forming a continuous barrier when closed. Check all doors after fitting by sliding a piece of card under the gap – if it slides through easily, the seal is inadequate.
Seal gaps around all pipework at ground level
Inspect every point where a pipe enters through the external wall at or near ground level – water supply pipes, waste pipes, gas pipes and any conduit for cables. Any gap around the pipe should be filled with exterior-grade flexible filler or expanding foam. The foam expands to fill irregular gaps and sets firm, but use the slow-expanding type in confined spaces to avoid overfill. Once cured, trim flush with the wall and apply exterior silicone sealant over the foam to prevent weathering.
Address airbricks leading to suspended floor voids
Airbricks must not be blocked entirely – they ventilate the floor void and blocking them causes damp and rot in the floor joists. Instead, fit a mesh airbrick cover with a fine grid (the opening size should be smaller than 5mm) over any existing airbricks. This maintains ventilation while preventing slug entry. Inside the floor void, any gaps around pipes that emerge up through the floor into the kitchen or bathroom should also be sealed with flexible filler.
Check and repoint damaged mortar joints at ground level
Older properties often have eroded or crumbling mortar at the base of the external walls, particularly where the ground level is close to the wall face. Walk the full perimeter in daylight and press any suspicious mortar with a screwdriver – if it crumbles, it needs repointing. External repointing is straightforward for small sections using a pre-mixed exterior mortar, applied with a pointing trowel and tooled smooth. Larger sections of damaged pointing may be better left to a professional if structural integrity is a concern.
Use a torch held low and parallel to the ground on a damp night to find dried slug trails. The low-angle light catches the sheen of dried mucus on hard surfaces that is invisible under normal overhead lighting. This technique quickly reveals the exact route a slug took and often leads directly back to the entry point without requiring a full perimeter inspection.
Barriers and Deterrents That Work
Once entry points are sealed, the problem should resolve entirely without further intervention. However, in cases where a complete seal is not immediately possible – perhaps because a repair is pending or because the entry point has not yet been located – a combination of deterrents can reduce slug activity inside the house while the underlying fix is made.
It is worth noting that slug pellets used outside the house, around the perimeter, are significantly more effective than any indoor treatment because they intercept slugs before they enter rather than dealing with them after. Scattering pet-safe pellets in a 30cm band around all external doors and known entry points on damp evenings during peak slug season – typically September to November and again in March to April – reduces the population pressure on the house considerably. This outdoor treatment works best as a complement to the sealing work described above, not as a substitute for it.
In severe or persistent cases, a slug nematode treatment applied to the soil around the house perimeter in late summer can reduce slug populations in the garden significantly. Nematodes are microscopic organisms that target slugs specifically without harming other wildlife, pets or children, and are available as a powder mixed with water and applied through a watering can. A single application lasts around six weeks and is most effective when the soil temperature is above 5°C. Used in combination with sealed entry points and outdoor pellet treatment, nematodes provide the most comprehensive long-term slug control available to UK homeowners.
